The eSports Award was founded back in 2004 by Turtle Entertainment, the company behind the Electronic Sports League, to benefitely reward the work of players, teams, managers and journalists. To ensure the professionality and seriousness of the project and to sustain the popularity, as well as the prestige of the award on a continuous high level, only the most experienced people were invited to be on the jury and determine the winners of the particular categories. Most categories' winners are determined through the jury, however, some categories require the community to vote for its winners, such as "Best eSports Coverage". The award ceremony will take place at the end of August at the Games Convention.

Since WarCraft III is mostly played 1 vs. 1 on the big tournaments and leagues, the nomination in this category is limited to the skills of merely one player. The world's elite is moving together with the skill gap diminishing each day and the current skill level of the players remains on a continuous high level. This is underscored by the fact that the Dutch Orc player Grubby has taken the award home for two times now.

The roots of eSports are definitely to be found in the duel scene, as when Doom was released in 1993 as the first computer game which could be played on LAN, eSports was born. Because there were several FPS duel tournaments in the past, Turtle Entertainment wants to pay attention to the players.
